Sermon Notes from Pastor Clint (7-20-05)
The Beatitudes (#2), Matthew 5:3-12 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
1) Blessed are those who mourn (Matthew 5:4) a) Understanding Mouring
Mourn Defined: 1. to feel or express DEEP regret for; to GRIEVE over (someone who has died); to UTTER sorrowfully.
* Valid reasons and God does comfort those when times get tough * But there is a deeper truth when it comes to our Christianity
"You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you." Matthew 5:4 (The Message Bible)
b) Sometimes our SIN can be the DEAREST thing to us.
Do you mourn your many sins?
We must also realize that as believers we all have violated God's law, but only true Christians, under the conviction of the Holy Spirit will realistically declare not only are they spiritually bankrupt, but they are completely lost without Jesus Christ living in their lives.
"In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God."
c) Sin brings a barrier between YOU and GOD
The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-24) i. SELF sufficient (was not poor in spirit) ii. Hired HIMSELF out iii. He saw what his life was REALLY like
What is your life really like?
"Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." 2 Corinthians 7:10
Godly mourning and sorrow leads to repentance which brings salvation. Godly sorrow causes us to loathe and despise sin, and this leads the believer to sincerely repent of those sins. Those who experience Godly sorrow truly forsake sin and turn to the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. These are the necessary steps to eternal salvation. |
